Hydro jetting is what we recommend when a line backs up, gets cleared and backs up again. Lodi Pro Plumbing runs jetting calls 24/7 in Lodi, NJ, and a sewer or kitchen line that is already overflowing gets treated as a same-day emergency. While you wait, stop using every fixture that drains into the blocked line, because each flush adds water to a pipe that cannot take it.
Hydro jetting pushes water through a hose at high pressure and a nozzle that fires jets forward and backward. The spinning spray cuts through grease, scours scale off the pipe wall and flushes the debris to the main. A cable machine opens a hole through the clog. A jet cleans the whole pipe.

Jetting fits some problems better than others:
- Grease buildup in a kitchen or restaurant line that comes back every few weeks.
- Scale and mineral coating that narrows an older drain.
- Fine tree root hairs growing through joints in a main line.
- Silt and sand left in a line after flooding.
- A cable that clears the clog but leaves a slow drain behind.
It does not suit every pipe. A line with a collapse, a deep sag or a crack needs a camera check before any high-pressure work, because water at jetting pressure can push soil or debris through a broken section. That is why we recommend a camera inspection when the pipe's condition is unknown.
Cable or jet: how to choose
| Question | Cable machine | Hydro jet |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Cuts a hole through the clog | Scours the whole pipe wall |
| Best for | A single fresh clog | Grease, scale, roots and silt |
| Leaves behind | A thin channel, residue stays | A clean pipe wall |
| Cost | Lower | Higher, but lasts longer |
| Risk | Low | Needs a sound pipe |
Most homes with a first-time clog need a cable. Jetting earns its price when the same drain has clogged twice, when a grease line serves a business, or when a camera shows heavy coating. Our drain cleaning page explains the first step.
What the visit looks like
The plumber follows a sequence so the work is safe for the pipe:
- Find the clean-out and confirm what pipe size and material you have.
- Run a camera first when the line has not been inspected before.
- Feed the jet hose down the line and clean it in passes, working from the downstream end back.
- Clear loosened debris to the main so it does not settle farther down.
- Run the camera again where useful and show you what the pipe looks like after cleaning.
Water use is high, and the crew sets up a way to keep wastewater contained. A clean-out in the basement is ideal. A line with no clean-out may need a toilet pulled or a roof vent used for access.
Jetting after floods
Lodi sits along the Saddle River, and heavy storms leave the lower parts of the borough underwater. The March 2024 flood that covered Main and Sydney streets and the September 2021 flooding after Ida are the kind of events that wash silt and debris into drain lines.
Fine silt settles in the low points of a pipe and hardens, so a line that was fine before the storm may flow slowly after it.
If your basement drain drains slowly for days after a flood, jetting is often the answer because silt is exactly what a jet moves best. Check the sump pump too, as our sump pump page explains.
What decides the cost of hydro jetting
- Length
- A short branch line is cheaper than a long run to the street.
- Pipe size
- Larger pipes need larger nozzles and more water.
- Condition
- Heavy grease or roots take more passes than light scale.
- Access
- A good clean-out saves setup time, and a missing one adds it.
The price is clear before work starts. If the camera shows a broken pipe, jetting is paused and you get a separate price for the repair.
Jetting for restaurants and shops
Kitchens along Main Street and Route 17 generate grease that coats drain lines faster than a cable can clear it. A restaurant that has to close for a day because of a backup loses far more than the cost of scheduled jetting. We run jetting on a maintenance schedule for businesses that need one. See commercial plumbing for the details.
Hydro jetting questions
Do you offer emergency hydro jetting at night or on weekends in Lodi?
Yes. The line is open 24/7, and a backed-up kitchen or sewer line is a same-day call. The plumber gives you the price before work begins.
Will hydro jetting damage my pipes?
Not in sound pipe at the right pressure. Old, cracked or collapsed pipe is at risk, which is why we check the line with a camera when we are unsure of its condition.
How long does the cleaning last?
That depends on the cause. Scale and silt can stay gone for years. Grease returns if the habits that created it continue. Ask what to change in the kitchen.
Is jetting messy?
It uses a lot of water, but it stays inside the pipe. The crew sets up at a clean-out and protects the floor.
Can jetting remove tree roots?
It clears fine roots and the hairs growing through joints. Thick roots may need a cutting head first, and a pipe that roots keep entering may need repair. See sewer line repair.
Code basis. Plumbing work in New Jersey follows the state plumbing subcode, N.J.A.C. 5:23-3.15, which adopts the 2021 National Standard Plumbing Code. Ask which permits apply to your job and confirm with the Lodi Building Department.
